HM Coastguard are reminding locals and visitors alike not to put themselves in danger if they see someone stuck or in trouble on the Isle of Wight this weekend.
With the Isle of Wight Festival well underway, Solent Coastguard have issued a timely reminder about the event’s close proximity to the River Medina, which poses a potential hazard for the thousands of people attending this year’s event at Seaclose Park, Newport.
Every year there are a number of incidents involving festival goers getting stuck in the mud attempting to reach the other side of the river. People see the small distance between the river banks and think its a quick short cut home, and attempt to swim for it or walk across the mud.
Unfortunately, they quickly find that the mud isn’t solid and in fact is very soft and sticky despite looking like a good route home. People then become very stuck and need assistance to get out.
The Coastguard say that they have found in the past that whilst people are having a good time they sometimes forget that the River Medina a tidal river and as such the water moves quicker than it appears.
2 Coastguard Rescue Teams are on patrol in the Newport area this festival weekend.
