Dog walkers will once again be banned from certain beaches around the Isle of Wight coast from next Monday, it has been confirmed.
The usual summer restrictions, which normally come into force on 1st May, were pushed back this year in response to the coronavirus crisis.
The decision was taken to help people to follow government guidelines for social distancing when exercising by keeping the beach available for this purpose and reducing the need for people to converge on alternative areas.
Notices are being put up at the entrances to beaches this week ahead of the ban coming into force again from Monday 8th June.
Councillor John Hobart, Cabinet member for environment and heritage, said:
“The decision was taken to extend the period that dogs could be walked on beaches to increase the space available for residents and their pets to take their regular daily exercise safely.
“Now, with the warmer weather here and with relaxed government guidance on the stay at home message, our beaches are becoming busier.
“We have already received complaints from some residents who wish to use the beach without the risk of dogs off leads invading their social distancing space.
“Restricting dogs during the summer months also helps to maintain water quality.
“There are of course numerous locations where dogs can be exercised that don’t have seasonal restrictions.”
The ban will be lifted on 30th September.

Good – about time
But hes got glasses on look at how cute he is
I was down at Seaview beach when a dog emptied its bowls in front of me then after about 10 minutes a lady came along obviously searching for the poo as she had seen from a distance that her dog had assumed the pooing stance how amazing was that I was well impressed
Despite the Seaview lady diligently searching for, and removing the offensive pile, my point is would you then be happy for your child to sit on that spot, having a picnic?
All too often, the sloppy nature of dogs bowels cannot be effectively cleared up by using just a bag, as the smears left behind, stick to the sand, the gravel, and entwine in grass and vegetation, leaving just as many germs, but ‘then’ invisible to spot for the person who thinks the area is clear of dogs dirt.
Best to keep them off the beaches in Summer, and IF oh-so-safe, let them poo in your own garden.
I can just see YOUR face if a dog owner allowed their dog onto your back lawn to poo and picked it up, telling YOU there is ‘no problem’. There is, it is called germs and it is disgusting.
You are pathetic !!!! What about dirty nappies and rubbish left in the beach at least dog owners clear their meds up !!
Unfortunately far from all
Not many do, it’s discusting these dog obsessed people will put dog before a child, can’t se any wrong in the germs and filth they leave everywhere, keep them in their own gardens
You can’t tell a dog when to poo! Do you poo to order?
That’s what all us responsible dog owners do! Par for the course
Thank goodness for that, although I hope there is someone who will occasionally police it!
it needs policing for all the idiots that leave all their rubbish on the beaches. there behave fines for people that don’t clear up after themselves bot dog owners and beach goers, the latter being the worse of the two.
Well put
It’s about time they should never be allowed on the beach in the first place and most of the owners need a lesson in the responsibly of dog ownership and how to use a lead
I’m more likely to catch toxocariasis from the lack of people cleaning up after their dog but thanks
Why bother introducing ‘bans’ when there is no one to enforce it anyway?
There is already a ban on dogs doing toilet all over the pavements but nothing is done about that so nothing will be done about the beach issue either.
‘Dogs in towns’ is a disgusting and filthy concept. And when the horrible things aren’t pooping everywhere their irresponsible, useless inadequate owners just let them bark all day with no consideration of neighbours.
You are pathetic all dogs are not like that they do not spend their time pooing all day they’d certainly have a problem if that was the case at least their not high on drugs littering up the beach with used needles and drug paraphernalia dirty nappies beer cans empty bottles and grumpy old gits like you lots hope you don’t need a dog to save your life one day you need to know the wonderful help they give to people
Well said linda
Thank god, nothing worse than standing in crap or worse kids playing in it, or having wet drawing dogs running over your towel, while owners casually smile and say “ohh he loves to play” urm Well I don’t I now stink of wet mut
I think what stinks is the attitude of people like you. I see more kids and even adults running over our towels than any dogs. Infact ive never had a dog on our towels!
At least dogs arent leaving broken glass on beaches along with litter and used bbq trays.
Maybe those beaches for walking dogs shouldn’t allow people who are not dog walkers because there is nothing worse than being a responsible dog owner and having to pick up other peoples rubbish incase we or the dog hurt ourselves on it.
There is an awful lot of negativity on here about dogs being allowed in public areas.
If anyone has a problem with dogs then what a sad life they lead.
Sure there are some people who dont pick up after their pet, and we all feel the same about those sorts of people but in all honesty the responsible dog owners FAR outweigh them.
If you are actually seeing a dog owner allowing their pet to run wild then whip your phone out and shame them because the rest of us do not deserve this negative energy!
Well said C.kent. Agree with you totally. Can’t understand people who smash their bottles at the end of a picnic. It happens in the local fields too. I’m constantly picking it up and disposing in nearest bin. Can’t work out if its ignorance or laziness (must take less energy to smash a bottle). Soon be moaning if it were their kids feet cut.
The thing with these dog obsessed people is they can never see it from a non dog lovers view, just because you like your dog dosnt mean other people do, just because you think it’s cute and fun others want it to clear off so they can relax, we’re not interested in fake smiles and ahh isn’t he cute, take the dam thing home
About bloody time !!!
This is mainly directed to the disgusting lazy filthy owners who leave the dog mud for people to fall victim too…
Dogs excreta, due to processed dogs food is often very runny now, not like the old days when bones eaten made the dogs soil into solid lumps like chalk, and so it is now very difficult to pick up in it’s gluey sticky mass effectively.
Whilst dog owner who do pick up think they are then not a problem they are wrong, as doing so then gives a false sense of cleanliness, when in fact the contaminated area is anything but cleansed, and the next child to play in the golden sand may find the sand castle is a dangerous infected with dogs business to spread onto little hands and catch worms or have give the child a serious illness.
Perhaps a little flag on a sticks could be sold with dog poo bags and the site could be marked by such, or maybe a flourescent powder of chalk, so we could avoid it and the dog owner could spray strong disinfectant on the contaminated spot to try to kill some of the worms eggs, germs and viruses.
Dogs belong in the countryside NOT human’s bathing beaches.
Let it poo in YOUR OWN garden, IF it is oh so safe. You won’t, cos it ISN’T.
Beaches aren’t there exclusively for humans! Dog owners are restricted enough everywhere so let us have our dog beaches in peace and stop complaining. It’s kids on the beach that cause more problems with noise and rubbish. I know as I’ve had both! And as for your comment on processed foods you haven’t a clue what you’re talking about. A well fed dog does not have sloppy poo far from it. You obviously have never had dogs so don’t talk about things you know nothing about. And responsible owners regularly worm their dogs.
Can’t come soon enough!!!!
Well I have 2 dogs and I take my dogs to the part of the beach there allowed on if you don’t like being by or with dogs , why do you sit in the areas for dogs and family with dogs , there are beaches on the island that don’t allow dogs at all …….and why sit in the dog area isn’t the beach big enough for you to move there are enough signs soaying dog beach …and most dog owners pick up there dog poo , it’s the ignorant ones who don’t SO ITS SIMPLE IF TOU DONT LIKE DOGS DON’T SIT IN THE DOG PART OF THE BEACH THEN YOU WOULDN’T HAVE TO COMPLAIN
Lead and kennel, dogs arnt human as much as most people think they are, beaches are for people, families, children,
Of you don’t like dogs on beaches then use the other beaches which don’t allow dogs !! Or is it they are too busy with families and rubbish so you’d rather go to the quieter beaches and moan about dogs !!!
id put you on a lead and in a kennel bob see how you’d like it , but then thats probably just the reaction you’ve been looking for 😉
When reading the type of comment you get from many dog owners about fouling on the beaches, I’m always reminded of an old Eddie Izzard sketch about gun control- ‘guns dont kill people, people do… but the gun helps!’
Its not the dogs fault, its the irresponsible owners… but the dog helps!
We went to Compton beach yesterday and too the left for dog walking was packed with families pick nicking and bbq’s and got dirty looks for letting our dogs off the lead. How is that fair.
Not fair at all! Beaches aren’t exclusively for families. Some people hate kids too but they never speak up do they? It’s always people ranting on about dogs and their owners.
