Large pieces of cut and charred timber have been recklessly discarded in Wootton Creek, resulting in debris floating down river towards the Solent.
Small branches and occasionally chunks of timber end up in the water when banks give way and strong winds bring trees down. However, the debris found at Fishbourne Quay this morning (Thursday) appears to have been clean cut.
Some of the wood appears to have also been charred by fire, suggesting the debris has been purposefully dumped in the sea.
Those living in and around Wootton say they heard chainsaws being used in the area last night.
Rebel Marine, who operate from Fishbourne, say that such large pieces of wood – some measuring up to 20ft in length – pose a risk to shipping.
