The Isle of Wight is in a better COVID position as rates of the virus drop, according to the public health chief.
Following the national trend, the Isle of Wight has now fallen to a 7-day case rate of 393.6 cases per 100,000 people, from a peak on 10th January – just 19 days ago – of 1,171.6.
On a single day in January almost 400 COVID-19 cases were recorded, according to Public Health figures.
While the number of cases has steadily fallen, public health director for the Island, Simon Bryant, has said it now may fall more slowly.
Speaking at a meeting of the Isle of Wight Council’s Health and Wellbeing Board, he said:
“We are in a positive position but we must not be complacent, as I know the NHS is under a huge strain and we want to make sure those rates continue to fall by complying with the lockdown guidance.”
Mr Bryant warned that as the new variant of the virus, which caused Island COVID cases to shoot up, spreads so much faster, a lapse in any of the safety measures, such as social distancing, wearing a mask or hand hygiene, could increase infections again.
The rate at which people are testing positive for COVID-19, something which helped determine which tier an area falls into for restrictions, is ‘still quite high’ on the Island. As it stands the figure is 12.3 when ideally it should be under 5.
Mr Bryant was hopeful as the rate of infection falls, the rate of hospitalisation and deaths will eventually fall but the Island may still see an increase in deaths.
This is fantastic news everybody.
This is good news the infection rate is falling. BUT remember why it spiked so quickly……..overners pouring over here in the summer and too many people mixing at Christmas……

We are in lockdown for the third time, l think people have had enough of second home owners, holiday makers and holiday let owners doing what they want.Yes we have our own idiots on the Island as well, but an influx at half term will put us back to square one.

You are right, Mandy, half of the holiday lets and second homes down on Ventnor shore have the lights blinking off and on all week with a steady turnover of the entitled superiority. Even now, when, not a hundred yards from the beach, nine residents and one member of staff from a care home less than a hundred yards from the beach have died, they all still roam about with takeaway coffees asking local folk what we do all day….
Surely they won’t allow the ‘hoards’ of mainlanders to invade the island again???? Would they???? You never know with this lot in charge what they will do next!!!!!

We already have Tocilizumbab and Sarilumab that has been approved for use for the treatment of coronavirus.
Ivermectin is NOT approved for treatment of Covid and is mostly used to treat animals.
