The Isle of Wight Council has issued an update on the ongoing situation at Belgrave Road in Ventnor following the recent failure of a retaining wall and partial collapse of the road.
While the upper wall has shown recent signs of minor movement, there has been no significant change to the overall terracing structure in recent days nor any additional threat to properties in the affected area. Officials continue to undertake frequent monitoring of the site but have stood down the 24/7 watch.
Southern Water and SGN have completed work to ensure the water and gas supply can be safely maintained for residents and Island Roads have finished installing a safety netting system over the area. This is intended to reduce the risk of falling debris should further movement of the wall occur in the coming days and weeks.
Now that the wire netting has been installed, a local resident who was advised to evacuate their property has now been told it is safe for them to return.
The road remains closed to all traffic but pedestrian access has now been reinstated on Belgrave Road – allow people to walk between The Royal Hotel and the town.
The council are re-iterating that the safety of residents continues to be a top priority and it remains unsafe and impractical for contractors to intervene substantially onsite until the situation has stabilised.
As well as Island’s Roads’ presence on site, the council’s community liaison officers have also been making regular checks on residents and will continue to do so in the coming weeks.

Good God, had the wall had been ‘faced’ with gabion cages, the whole lot could be reinstated.
Now, local social housing children will be using the nets, to slide down and climb back up, like something from Monkey world.
Gabion cage walling if build properly would not give hand holds or enough space for feet to climb.
