The Isle of Wight Council and Amey have offered their sincere apologies that the use of the picture taken by Amey site staff and used in a press release may have caused a local resident discomfort.
Yesterday, the Council issued a press release to all Island media stating that an individual had travelled to Lynnbottom Tip and disposed of a broken coat hanger and a phone charger. However, the local man commented on Island Echo’s story to say that he had in fact taken a car load of green waste to the tip too.
Council officials say they have no reason to believe that there was not also green waste in the vehicle, as claimed by the individual concerned.
In a statement issued this afternoon, a spokesperson has said:
“We liaised with Amey overnight to investigate the incident further, including speaking with the staff member who was on ‘Meet and Greet’ duties that morning”.
In response, Amey has said:
“Amey does not condone the action of our employee resulting from a misunderstanding of the conversation he had with the resident and has conveyed apologies to the individual concerned via the council.”

The council spokesperson continues:
“The case was only ever intended to be used as an example to support the important message regarding non-essential journeys to the household waste recycling centre (HWRC).
“The health and safety of residents and site staff is extremely important as lock down measures are slowly released. We have had more examples of residents bringing a small number of items to the HWRC some of which could easily have been stored at home or collected at the kerbside”.
jeez – talk about an over reaction – who ever recognised their manky hanger needs to get a life. I think the fact that the local resident needed to actually complain should have caused him discomfort.
To make matters worse an employee of amey and a pen pusher at the council saw fit to spend their day investigating “hangergate”
Meet and Greet duties – my god, it is a council tip – not a 5 star restaurant’s maitre’d waiting to greet diners.
Pathetic.
There’s no overreaction when bringing lying officials to task.
They need to do better. Clearly in this instance they have gone a little way. The original article had the officious officials name all over it – so why is the name not equally prominent on an article apologising???
I went to the tip Tuesday and the guy that meets you said I couldn’t take drain pipe I said it’s hard plastic he said it was pvc…I said ok went to the wood skip and I asked the guy there and he said plastic goes in the next skip With no problem
That’s why these people work for the Council. Brain Dead.
Not so brain dead that they have a secure job with a pension and have control over many services the public use.
Keeping the one way system in place for 18 months seems excessive.

Great I tried to book a slot at Afton to get rid of garden waste and no slots available for May or June. So what am I suppossed to do with it? It will stink.
Pay £72 or £6 a month for a green waste bin. It gets picked up every 2 weeks. Saves the hassle and the chance of mingling with people.
put it in black bags and put it out with genral waste why pay more to dump refuse pay pay pay is all we ever do lazy gits never check bins now too keen to finish early
It won’t stink. It’ll dry out and be even lighter and more compact after it’s been more easily squashed down into a compact space, than when it was green and fresh..
So exactly where is the apology from the council. It looks like the standard officialdom double speak to me, i.e. avoid an actual apology and look to blame others or use some other reasoning.
Just admit you were wrong IWCC – Stating “Council officials say they have no reason to believe that there was not also green waste in the vehicle, as claimed by the individual concerned.” is not an apology.
We are not allowed to put electrical waste in our bins.
Joe – you can do what you want – you are not a child, just because some jobsworth tells you something, doesn’t mean you actually have to listen.
The guy has obviously put the items in the wrong receptacles. You do not put electrical items in the plastics bin.
Does seem very wrong that iwc and Amey had to investigate,dissaplin a member of staff – waste of public funds, green waste or not was still not needed to walk between 2 other skips for coat hanger and phone charger . If we can’t get a slot till July then my yard will be full of rat’s and stinking, when complaints come in !. Who
if the IW council really wanted to focus on keeping the island clean…
1. They would not charge anyone for using the tip
2. They would upscale the staff working there to sort for recycling.
3. The council would significantly increase investment in recycling centres and sorting centres.
4. Nothing would ever be buried.
5. A micro industry would be created for repurposing items that have reached the end of their lives – eg – mobile phones – strip down, get the gold etc out of them.
6. A very small incinerator for the few items that could not be recycled, repurposed or reused be installed- with all emissions passing through a CO2 scrubber and the gas collected, compressed and sold.
7. other tech employed to get rid of incinerator emissions… such as electrostatic precipitators, fabric filters, venturi scrubbers, cyclones and settling chambers. Air quality checked – if not up to standard – more reduction measures required.
Council would clear up fly tipping as reported – although would be minimal if no charge at the centre.
