CONSTRUCTION OF SANDOWN’S PREMIER INN GETS UNDERWAY

Work has finally begun on establishing the foundations of a brand new £10million Premier Inn hotel in Sandown.

It was back in December 2015 that Island Echo exclusively reported that the Carlton Hotel would be demolished to make way for the third Premier Inn on the Isle of Wight. Now, over 3 years later, construction of the 100-bed hotel is finally underway.

Contractors Carter Lauren have arrived at the Esplanade following adaption works to the road to facilitate a site compound. Parking has been suspended for a small stretch along the seafront to ensure the carriageway is kept open as the busy Summer season approaches.

The project appears to be on track as it was announced last month that piling works to create the foundations for the new hotel and Cookhouse & Pub restaurant would begin by mid-March.

Premier Inn were granted planning permission for the major scheme in late 2016. Demolition of the former Carlton Hotel took place in 2017 and early 2018 but the site has remained empty for the past 12 months. It was hoped that work would begin in June last year to enable the hotel to open this Summer. A revised opening date is yet to be set.
