Nearly 150 competitors took part in the Brading 10km organised by Ryde Harriers, with an unusual Sunday evening start.
The race provided the ‘headline event’ to start the Isle of Wight Festival of running (4th-13th June) this year. After a glorious sunny day, competitors were thankful that the temperatures were starting to cool off, helped by a welcome northerly breeze.
This set the scene for a fantastic race between defending champion Joe Wade (Ryde Harriers) and Chris Newham (Ryde Harriers). The pair matched each other stride for stride over the first 8 km, raising prospects of a sprint finish.
However, as Joe Wade entered Ryde, he managed to pull out a slight advantage and continued to build on this to win by 31 seconds, with a time of 31m 58s. Charlie Metcalfe (Ryde Harriers) was the 1st female recording a fantastic 9th overall, placing her a full 9 minutes ahead of the next female competitor.
As a club, Ryde Harriers performed well on home roads, taking 6 of the top 10 places.
