The Isle of Wight Council has confirmed that the Shanklin Cliff Lift is out of service following an unexpected loss of power, which led to the rescue of 2 people yesterday (Sunday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, firefighters from Sandown and Shanklin were called to the lift at just before 18:00 when it was reported that 3 individuals were trapped inside the lift.
Crews manually lowered the lift to the ground level and all 3 people – thought to be 2 members of the public and a staff member – were freed.
Council officials have confirmed that the lift remains out of service at this time and an update will be issued when more is known.
Island Echo understands that just 1 lift shaft has been used in recent times.
A spokesperson for the Isle of wight Council has said:
“Shanklin Lift lost power to the lift car on Sunday evening. In the lift were two customers and a member of staff.
“The emergency procedure was followed, and the fire service attended, manually lowing the Lift car to the ground and releasing the passengers.
Article continues below this advertisement “Southern and Scottish Energy have this morning attended Shanklin lift to investigate the issue the power outage, and restored power.
“Lift engineers are now awaited from the mainland to finalise repairs and return the lift to service, which is anticipated during Wednesday 4 September.
“The Isle of Wight Council apologises for the inconvenience and will issue updates when available.”
