Centre forward Charlie Urry hit the back of the net 4 times as Ventnor overcame Brading in torrential rain at Vicarage Lane last night (Tuesday) to advance to the next round of the Isle of Wight Senior (Gold) Cup.
The Romans – playing down the slope in the 1st half – had an early chance when Dan Vale had a header blocked by Rio Barratt.
Ventnor opened the scoring in the 10th minute through a shot-cum-cross from Jack Barsdell that eluded Brading keeper Harry Mitchell (0-1).
2 minutes later, Charlie Urry added a 2nd for the away side with a strike that was parried by Mitchell before bouncing off the upright and trickling over the line (0-2).
At this point in the game, it appeared that the formidable Ventnor side – further strengthened by the signing of Harrison Berry from East Cowes Vics – might win by a cricket score. However, to their credit, the Romans fought back, with Dan Vale burying the ball in the roof of the net on the quarter hour mark (1-2).
Just past the half hour mark, Ellis Lomas equalised for Brading with a shot from outside the penalty area (2-2).
The final word in the half went to Ventnor centre forward Charlie Urry, who sent the ball across the face of the goal to score in the 37th minute (2-3).
Half time: Brading Town 2-3 Ventnor
The away side went down to 10 men shortly after the half time interval when Callum Illman was given his marching orders by referee Ali Taylor for a foul inside the penalty area, with the resulting spot kick converted by Dan Vale (3-3).
Just past the hour mark, Ventnor were also awarded a penalty, which was converted by Charlie Urry: the centre forward’s hat trick (3-4).
An Urry header then extended the South Wight’s side lead 6 minutes from full time (3-5).
The final few minutes were not without drama. First, the Romans had a goal disallowed after Ali Taylor consulted with the the Ventnor linesman (and manager) Gary Gee.
Then, an injury time strike from Iaaac Glynn reduced Ventnor’s advantage to a single goal (4-5).
However, Brading were unable to equalise for a 3rd time to send the tie to penalties, and Ventnor advanced to the next round of the Gold Cup.
