A concert by the Phoenix Choir to raise funds to celebrate the Centenary of St Saviour’s church in Totland will be held this weekend (Saturday 1st July).
St Saviour’s was built in 1923 to accommodate the ever-growing number of Catholics in the West of the Wight who could no longer fit for Sunday mass into the chapel at Weston Manor. This was the home of the Ward family who donated the land for the church, school and presbytery to the Church. The church is Italianate in style.
The church will have two centenary celebrations – a Mass at 12:00 on Sunday 13th August 2023 followed by lunch, and one on the actual Centenary day – 15th August 2023 – the Feast of the Assumption at 18:00, followed by a meal.
A commemorative plaque will be erected and Parish and St Saviour’s School will be involved.
The Phoenix Choir will again be singing their eclectic selection of easy listening songs which will include musical numbers from Phantom Of The Opera, Fiddle On The Roof, Singin’ In The Rain, Grease, Top Hat, Cabaret and The Lion King, amongst other popular tunes from different genres.
The concert commences at 19:30, admission is free with a retiring collection.
