The Footprint Trust is holding their annual ‘Cash Low? Cash Flow!’ event in Newport this week to help bring down utility bills and help people concerned about debt.
Winter is just around the corner and energy prices have just gone up. All of the big 6 energy firms have all put up their prices this year. British Gas has just increased standard electricity prices by 12.5%.
The event, which is being held between 11:00-15:00 on Thursday 26th October at the Riverside Centre, Newport, can help people switch suppliers and explain the advantages of Smart meters.
Organisations at the free event will be giving guidance on managing money and gaining benefits and allowances. Information will be available about the advantages of Smart meters and details of grant funding for insulation and boilers. Those attending include; Citizens Advice, Southern Water’s Affordability team, Isle of Wight Council Housing Benefit support team and energy experts from the local Footprint Trust.
Last year The Footprint Trust charity helped over 2,000 people with energy and water issues. This year they are particularly focusing on young people setting up home for the first time and the Veteran community. The Trust’s new PowerForce project works with The Royal British Legion and other organisations to assist ex-service personnel and their families who are struggling with their heating bills. The Trust is just about to start training people as Energy Champions, so they in turn can help their friends, neighbours and families sort out energy issues.
The Footprint Trust is also working with Family Centres and the Jobcentre to provide free training to young people though its Monergy project. This fun training workshop gives those attending skills to understand bills, and how to use appliances to best effect, whilst keeping warm and well.
Training is also offered to frontline workers in charities, churches, the Council and NHS staff to help them identify those at risk from poverty and illness linked to high fuel and water bills.
The event is supported by The Royal British Legion, IW Carers, Newport Parish Council and Smart UK.
