Damage has been caused to the roof of a parked car in East Cowes following the collapse of a huge tree branch this afternoon (Monday).
A limb of one of the Victorian trees at Victoria Jubilee Recreation Ground has crashed to the ground unexpectedly.
A Ford Fiesta has sustained damage as a result of the incident on York Avenue.
Emergency work is now being carried out by Island Roads and the Isle of Wight Council to clear the debris from the pavement.

Yes, unless the council knew (or ought to have known) there was an issue with the tree. They have a duty of care, but not a strict liability. If they can show they have a regime of tree inspection and can demonstrate this was a freak incident (summer branch drop for instance) then the council will almost certainly not be liable. Makes you think about parking under any big tree.
