Heavy traffic and poor parking arrangements has made Caesars Road in Newport a ‘calamity waiting to happen’ say campaigners.
It is argued that the residential street in the heart of the town has been turned into a ‘rat run’ and suffers from a lack of proper parking arrangements.
Steve Hastings, Conservative Campaigner for Newport Central Ward says:
“Caesars Road has parking down both sides, which doesn’t leave room for two-way traffic to pass. We often see vehicles come head to head, with one having to reverse back down the street. At peak times this is really dangerous. We urgently need a review of parking and traffic flow in this road.”
Meanwhile Councillor Chris Whitehouse, who represents Newport West Ward has said:
“Parking in Caesars Road is horrendous. We need proper provision for local residents. We saw vehicles parked unlawfully in the disabled space whilst the disabled driver had to wait for them to move, and we saw real problems for drivers who are unable to pass in the narrow space.”
“Local residents are simply fed up with the level of traffic and not being able to park in their own road. We need action on this.
“A local resident could be run down and receive serious injuries if something isn’t done soon. The situation could be ameliorated if we had some parking reserved for residents and council owned car parks allow the first hour free in Newport town centre. That would also boost local businesses.”
