itsaknockoutchildren'swardDoes your office or club need a team building exercise, or do you just want to have a laugh with your friends and family? Staff at St Mary’s Hospital Children’s Ward are hoping to knockout the competition and raise lots of money for their local appeal ‘Bring me Sunshine’.

The Bring Me Sunshine appeal supports the purchase of the little extras that make a child’s stay in (and life out of) hospital that little bit better.

The ‘It’s a Knockout’ competition will take place on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd August 2015 at Sandown and Shanklin Rugby Club. Teams of 10 (over 16’s only) are invited to compete against each other on a foam filled crazy assault course. There will also be a BBQ, bar and stalls for competitors to enjoy.

Matthew Powell, Children’s Ward Charge Nurse is taking part in the competition and hopes Islanders will be up for the challenge and get involved:

“Any stay in hospital for a child can be scary and it can also be difficult for their family so we are using the ‘Bring Me Sunshine Appeal’ to raise funds to make their hospital stay that little bit easier by providing some home comfort such as baby and infant toys, DVD players and games consoles, amongst other things, to entertain children and young people whilst in hospital”.

The idea for the Appeal came from the ward staff after Matthew challenged them, as part of a team building challenge, to turn £100 into £1,000 in six months for a wish list for patient comforts. The event has been developed by the Children’s Ward staff as they soon realised they needed more than a thousand pounds to fund their wish list. A number of departments within the hospital are keen to get involved and the Police, Fire Service, Island businesses, rugby teams and sports centres have expressed an interest.

Matthew continued:

“The Children’s Ward is entering two teams, one on each day, and even I have been persuaded to dress up and take part. We have had smaller fund raising events previously but this is the first major fund-raiser for the appeal and we are hoping that Island businesses and teams will join us, on either day, for a fun-filled activity that will be both enjoyable and for a worthwhile cause. If it is a success we are considering making it an annual event.”

The entry fee is £300 per team of 10 with a £100 deposit to secure a place. This equates to the bargain price of £30 per competitor.  There are 48 teams available so it is on a first come, first served basis. Email [email protected] to register your interest and to get more details.
