BEMBRIDGE, BINSTEAD AND W&B BATTLE THEIR WAY THROUGH TO SEMIS OF ISLAND ECHO CHALLENGE CUP

Bembridge, Binstead and W&B all reached the semi finals of the Island Echo Challenge Cup on Saturday (16th December). The remaining semi final place up for grabs will be between Brading and Ventnor, who will meet in the quarter finals in the new year.

EAST COWES SPORTS 3-7 BEMBRIDGE

A strong Bembridge side knocked 7 past East Cowes Sports in an entertaining game at the GKN Sports Ground. Bembridge were bolstered by the appearance of Jordan Browne, who was was available as Newport’s game against Millbrook was postponed, but were without influential defender Scott Sampson, who was unavailable. The away side began brightly, with Michael Brown sending a 25-yard screamer into the top left corner of the goal in the 9th minute. Josh Field then added a 2nd for Bembridge with a low shot to the right of the goal. ECS pulled a goal back on the half hour mark through an Aiden Jones penalty. 10 minutes from half time, Charlie Broadbent restored the away side’s 2-goal advantage with a tap in. On the stroke of half time, ECS reduced the deficit to 1 goal with a Callum Fryer header.

Half time: ECS 2-3 Bembridge In the 2nd half, Bembridge went up a further gear, knocking a further 4 goals past the home side to ensure their advance to the semis of the Island Echo Challenge Cup. Michael Brown completed his brace for Bembridge with a great finish, substitute Ant Kettell got onto the scoresheet with a superb strike, and Barry Calvert lobbed ECS keeper Reynolds from outside the penalty area. There was a also an own goal for the away side. Callum Fryer scored again for ECS to bag his brace. “Really proud of the boys yesterday, it was a dominant display to take us into the semi final. We played some lovely football and we really should of scored a few more. “Credit to ECS who kept trying to come back at us”

SHANKLIN 1-2 WHITECROFT & BARTON SPORTS In a repeat of last season’s final, W&B again beat Division 1 champions Shanklin by the best of 3 goals at the County Ground. W&B’s victory came courtesy of strikes from Joe Rayner and Sam Cant; Jamie Trowbridge scored Shanklin’s consolation goal. VECTIS 2-2 BINSTEAD & COB Binstead win 4-5 on penalties Binstead beat Vectis at Cowes Enterprise College in a penalty shootout. Ben Cutts and Jamie Barratt were on target for Vectis in normal time; Daz Powell and Zak Sullivan were in the goals for Binstead. The away side’s penalty takers (all successful) were: Zak Sullivan, Tom Grandvoinet, Henry West, Ryan Marchbank and Taylor Brooks. VENTNOR 3-2 COWES SPORTS RESERVES In the remaining 1st round game, Ventnor reached the semi final of the Island Echo Challenge Cup by overcoming the Yachtsmen at Watcombe Bottom. Ventnor’s goals came courtesy of a brace from Emmerson Tattershall and a further strike from Sonny Mulholland. Jordan Whittle and Max Coshell grabbed the goals for the Yachtsmen.
