A new free community event supported by Cowes Town Council has been announced for Sunday 28th May focussed on the Island’s UNESCO Biosphere status and sustainability.
It’s all happening between 10:00 and 17:00 at Moorgreen Reservoir Park in Cowes with a free mini festival of fun for the whole family!
There will be artist-led activities, entertainment, market stalls and more all centred around the theme of the Island’s UNESCO Biosphere status and sustainability with loads to see and do including Wildlife Discovery, Bug Hoovering, Museum of Nature, Kids Crafts, Arts Activities, Live Music, Fresh Local Food & more.
UNESCO Biosphere Reserves are places that are chosen for their outstanding natural and cultural character and recognised as places where local communities have an aspiration to live sustainably within their local ecosystems. This is a global designation and in 2019, the Isle of Wight was awarded Biosphere Reserve status by the international coordinating council of UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Programme. There are 700 Biosphere Reserves worldwide but the Isle of Wight is 1 of only 7 in the UK!
The event will kick off at 10:00 with ‘B is for Biosphere’ – a drop-in poster making workshop with Kay McCrann lasting until 12:30. Meanwhile, Paul Armfield will be performing songs about trees beneath the trees at the Woodland for half an hour from 10:30 and again at 15:30.
Kay McCrann will also be leading ‘Dirty Drawing: In the dirt, with the dirt, about the dirt!” – another drop-in workshop taking place between 13:30 and 16:00.
There will also be a number of all day drop-in activities including iWatchWildlife Workshop, Moorgreen Mural Upgrade workshop with Alice Malia, Kite Making and Nature Crafts with Wilder Learning, Giant Colouring-in with Polly Zanardi, History & Nature workshop with Holly Medland, The Pop-Up Natural History Museum with The Common Space and Allotment Tours.
Cowes Baptist Church will be open between 10:30 and 11:30 for their all-age Celebration Service for Pentecost Sunday and will be staying open until 17:00 where they’ll be serving tea, coffee and cakes as well as some all-essential toilet facilities for the day, including baby changing facilities.
There will also be traders for the first time at Moorgreen Reservoir Park including Blackgang Bakes, Andy Fortune Wood Turner, The Flying Coffee Machine, Cyclewight, and lots of handcrafted items, local produce and art!
The event is on Moorgreen Road in Cowes, located between the allotments and the Cowes Baptist Church, P031 7AH. Look out for the big gates upon entry where there will be some beautiful decorations on loan from the brilliant Shademakers.
