One of the UK’s biggest grocers, which has numerous stores here on the Isle of Wight, has doubled the price of its Bags for Life.
Tesco says the price hike is in a bid to reduce the amount of plastic being consumed from their stories, with the price increased to put customers off from buying them.
Tesco has it’s main Extra store in Ryde, along with it’s Express stores at Wootton, Lake and Ventnor.
The price has gone from 10p up to 20p, which hasn’t gone unnoticed by shoppers.
One shopper said:
“20p for a bag for life from Tesco doesn’t seem like such a good deal in the middle of a deadly pandemic.”
With another writing:
“Tesco I thought you said “every little helps” Why are your carrier bags 20p?”

A spokesperson for Tesco has said:
“We stopped selling single-use bags in 2017 after a successful trial in our stores.
“As part of our commitment to reduce waste and help the environment, we sell a 10p Bag for Life which, as of September 2020, is made from 100% recycled plastic.
“From 21 September, to further encourage our customers to reuse and recycle them more, we increased the price to 20p.
“Our ‘Bag for Life’ bags, which are made from 100% recycled materials, will be replaced free of charge when they wear out.”
It is understood that Sainsbury’s currently charges either 5p or 10p for its bags for life.
As of July this year, Asda increased the prices of its plastic bags to 15p and Aldi increased the price of their bags for life to 20p. However, Morrisons claims it charges 30p per bag for life.

Easy answer take your own bags or a rucksack even. Don’t give Tesco any more money. The other supermarkets will all follow this now. Get your bags quick.
Just remember to take your worn bag for life back and swap it for a new one. Then they can sent them off to be recycled again.
Mind you, the bags for life that i can see labelled in the store i use mainly, the bags for life are not made out of plastic!
Is it then really a bag for life when you have to replace it for a new one. Triggers broom comes to mind.

Should be going for free with weaved bags
But think of those huge Whales, singing joyful tunes to one another now not having died from eating your discarded carrier, which by some miracle of teleportation manages to appear from your bin, or tangled in some leafless hedgerow in the UK then into the deep azure ocean feeding ground of these magnificent wonders of life.
Then by another miracle of science this tattered piece of plastic then is found in the thousands of miles of ocean, and manages to kill a creature larger than the Tesco store itself.
Don’t know what the fuss is about re-use the bags and when it falls apart take it in for a FREE new one (thats why they are called a bag for life). The only people who are complaining are the people who can’t be bothered to take a bag with them and are still buying carrier bags everytime they go shopping.

20p what a joke. Should charge a £1 each. People who care for the environment and the world they live in keep using the same shopping bags and don’t keep buying new bags everytime they shop.
How about brown paper grocery sacks like they use in the states. That way they rot down un like plastic ones we use over here.
Tesco, Sainsbury to I had to pay 20p for a bag and when I had a grumble I was told the same. From now on Everything I buy that is unnecessary packed in plastic I will now be leaving it on their Doorstep as they are so concerned. Bananas in plastic, cucumbers in plastic, grapes you have to buy in quantity as wrapped in plastic. Let’s go back to the old days when you just have as many or not so many and you just have paper free Bags.
Disagree, as bread uncovered is coughed over, handled by the great unwashed and will spread phlegm, dead skin cells, and CV over our ‘daily bread’ etc.
Keep it bagged and see that plastic is NOT an issue, just an EXCUSE to make yet ‘another’ stealth tax under the guise of ‘saving the planet’.
IF they want to save the planet, then stop importing people here, to breed us into such poverty we then can’t feed our own, let alone then help the worlds poor.
I can’t honestly remember the last time I bought a plastic carrier bag. I use the canvas type ones every time I go shopping, which I take with me every time. Much better for the environment and saves money too. 🙂 Oh, and I’m young – ish, so not someone who remembers doing this in the war (although I fully agree whole heartedly with being environmentally friendly), but I’ve just always thought it’s good practice to re use bags. Just takes a little thought and being organised, that’s all. 🙂
