All 3 Isle of Wight Wessex League clubs cross the Solent to face North Island opposition today (Saturday).
Wessex Premier Cowes Sports make the journey to Dorset to face newly promoted Hamworthy Recreation.
The Yachtsmen are currently 13th in their league – 7 places below Hamworthy Rec.
The Yachtsmen have won 3 and lost 3 of their last 6 games; Hamworthy are on a run of 3 straight wins.
Cowes will be travelling with their new signing from Newport: centre forward Jordan Browne.
Co-manager Ian Potts says of the fixture:
“Hamworthy Recreation are a very good side, who got promoted last season and went deep.in the Vase. They have carried on their winning ways in our league and are currently up near the play off positions
“We played them at the start of the season and drew; they are a good, solid footballing side. We will go there on the back of a good performance against a spirited West wight side and hopefully get a result.”
In Wessex Division 1, 6th-placed Newport travel to Powder Monkey Park (near Gosport) to face 7th-placed Fleetlands.
Newport have now gone 10 games unbeaten; Fleetlands are on a run of 4 successive wins in the league.
Port co-manager Joe Butcher, who has recently returned from a birthday trip to New York – says of the game:
“I think against it’s another hard game. Fleetlands are directly below us in the league, so it’s a good chance for us to build a gap below us and keep chasing the playoff spots.”
Regarding Port’s 1-1 draw with Clanfield midweek, Joe says:
“I think it’s a missed opportunity, but equally at 1-0 down with 5 minutes to go, I’d take 1 point over 0.”
Also in Division 1, 5th-placed East Cowes Victoria make the long journey to Surrey to play 2nd-placed Frimley Green.
Vics – who have the best defensive record in their division – have won 4 of their last 6 games in all competitions as have Frimley Green
With all 3 Wessex League sides playing off the Island, today is an opportunity for fans of the ‘Big 3’ to take in some Harwoods Isle of Wight league action.
