It will be eyes to the skies this weekend (20th/21st July) as many different types of fixed-wing aircraft compete in The Royal Aero Club Records Racing and Rally Association handicap races out of Sandown Airport.
Following on from the success of last year’s event, which was held in May, air racing returns to the Isle of Wight on both Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st July.
The route will see the competitors take off from the airport at Sandown before flying over Apse Heath and Godshill, turning at Chale to follow the coastline around to St Catherine’s Point, Ventnor, Luccombe, Shanklin, across Sandown Bay to Yaverland and then back to the airport.
Visitors to the airport can expect to see all the planes in their full glory, as well as live music, food and drink from the onsite bistro and BBQ.
The event will be officially opened by High Sheriff Geoff Underwood at 13:00 on Saturday with the first race taking place between 13:30-14:30. On Sunday, the second race of the weekend will take place between 10:30 and 11:30 with a prize-giving ceremony with Councillor Clare Mosdell at 13:30.
Both races will be held over 100 miles, meaning 4 laps of the 25-mile course. The planes will fly at around 500ft.

This was mentioned in the c.p. with no follow up until next Friday after the event, when it will be news again, In the mean time we miss it. THANK TO ISLAND ECHO, Just keeping us up to date with events that WILL be happening, not “oh that was a good.event show..etc” .
