A cut-through on the outskirts of Newport could be widened to allow 14 houses to be built on the agricultural land to one side of the lane.
Planning permission has been submitted by Mrs C, Ferns, of the Cotton Trust, to the Isle of Wight Council asking for outline permission to build 14 dwellings on Landscape Lane.
Landscape Lane connects 2 busy routes into Newport — Staplers Road and Long Lane — which motorists use to cut through to avoid the roundabout near Pan’s Bluebell Meadows.
The site was allocated for 10 houses as part of the draft Island Planning Strategy in 2018.
The applicant says it is a significant positive opportunity and could see 2, 3 and 4-bed houses built as a mix of 1 and 2-storey properties, in 2 cul-de-sacs.
While the site would not provide affordable housing, planning documents said an offsite contribution would be made.
Planning agents, Phil Salmon Planning have said, however, the rural feel to the character of the lane would be kept.
The lane itself is narrow and would be widened at ‘strategic points’ to allow vehicles to pass safely as well as providing a formal footpath.
A pre-application consultation with residents, parish council and other public bodies was undertaken before final plans were submitted.
Residents agreed to the principle of housing but felt the lane was already too busy with traffic and it should be kept as it is.
Comments on the application, 20/01529/FUL, can be made up until 30th October on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning portal.

Who is this idiot trying to kid – the rural feel will only be kept by not building benefit hutches on land that is designated for agriculture – when there is no fresh food in the shops and people want to know why – we can say because some idiot thought it would be a good idea to concrete over the land that was used to grow your food.
there is no need for these houses – and the land should be preserved for agricultural use
The article clearly states that affordable housing is not part of the application, so where do you get Benefit Hutches from?
not the sharpest are you Mr B Keeper – this is playing the long game – build a few houses, on one bit of a field, then a few years time, in comes another application to build on more of the field, which dilutes the value of the existing houses, which enjoy greenfield views. Those owners sell at a loss to housing associations and buy to let owners, who then strike up deals with the benefits agency to let them use the house on a 25 year lease, for a guaranteed rent, to house those on benefits. Then the rest of the field is built and voila, a new council estate.
If you are not in favour of the application, it would be great if you could object to it, it would be much appreciated by the local residents. No doubt this is only phase 1. How long before another application is put in to build on that chunk of land behind. Before you know it there will be houses half way up long lane.

You would think with all that money and profit sloshing around, that there could be one ‘affordable house’ built. Smacks of brown envellopes…
IF we had less imported cheap labour, the houses would not HAVE to be so called ‘affordable’ as wages would have kept pace with such.
Clearly IF masses of people arrive then employers can pay the minimum knowing IF you won’t work for such others, who then have their wages made up will.
But this prevents us getting a decent sum to be able to obtain a mortgage as once many more could.
See the REAL problem here.

How many more properties need to be built this side of Newport.
The West Wight has plenty of room especially between Newport and Freshwater.
The roads here just cannot take any more traffic.
Planning need to plan!!

The headline states 14 houses planned, the write up states
The site was allocated for 10 houses as part of the draft Island Planning Strategy in 2018– in the picture I count 12 houses…. is it a pot luck build?“Give em an inch they’ll take a mile”
There is actually 2 semi detached houses there, but seeing as it was active green field land, why oh why did the Council include it in their planning for development?
Wonders who in the Council allowed this to happen as they are constantly saying they are protecting the environment?
Ha, protecting the environment…….where they live —- everything else is out of sight out of mind.

Once again money talks and having friends in high places, agriculturele land is supposed to be for agriculture not for building. Just shows there is one rule for one and one for another.

Phil Salmon i am sure will benefit along the way. More of our beautiful Island being ripped up all to house the dregs from the mainland, what a great benefit to the Island.
