A dozen Ryde Harriers joined a field of over 1,200 runners to face the gusts with gusto at Sunday’s Gosport Half Marathon. Traditionally a fast-paced course, this year’s 2-lap circuit tested the strength of its participants with bracing beachfront headwinds. Some much-needed encouragement came from Gosport Road Runners’ team of volunteer marshalls and the many members of the public who turned out despite the gales to cheer the racers along the route. The drumbeat of the samba band installed halfway around the loop further boosted morale and lifted energy levels. Buoyed by this support, the Harriers put their heads down and powered into the breeze, later reaping the rewards of their early hard miles with a speedy downwind home straight. The fastest Harrier to the finish was Keaan Amin with a time of 1:23:08, closely followed by men’s team captain Trevor McAlister. Ladies’ captain Nat Rose led the ladies’ female Harriers, finishing the gruelling course in an impressive 1:58:40, while Martin Dyer, Lizzy Galbraith and Sam Johnson all celebrated new half marathon personal bests.
