The controversial £1 charge for parking on the Isle of Wight overnight has been pushed back until at least June, the Isle of Wight Council have confirmed.
Earlier this year it was agreed to introduce the charge to boost the Council coffers, with notices erected to state that the fee would come in from 6th April.
Issues with parking meter software and the task of changing all related signage has meant that the decision has now been taken to push back the rollout of the overnight charge.
It’s thought that the charge will come into force in early June.
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has this week said:
“The Isle of Wight Council has a statutory duty to display an official notice indicating new chargeable hours. The notices are effective from April 6 but they do not state charges are implemented from then.
“People are advised to check the tariff boards as these will be changed to indicate overnight charging has started”.

Parking here must be one of the most expensive places to park in the country (Just like the Buses and the Ferries)
‘Issues with parking meter software and the task of changing all related signage’… sums it up. The enormous cost involved to meet this goal would almost certainly outweigh any gains, particularly at £1 a night. Commercial folly, yet again, Laughable. The Council couldn’t run an ice cream bike.
And let’s not forget the extra wage for the traffic wardens who will now be working nights.
