2 Wetherspoon pubs on the Isle of Wight have been acclaimed for the quality of their real ale – by branch members of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).
Both S. Fowler & Co. in Union Street, Ryde and The Man in the Moon in St James Street, Newport are listed in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide 2020, the UK’s best-selling beer and pub guide.
Local branch members chose the pubs following regular visits to check on the quality of the real ales on offer. They also took into account customer service, décor and overall atmosphere.
A CAMRA spokesman said:
“The pubs deserve their place in the Good Beer Guide 2020.
“It is our belief that if a licensee serves an excellent pint of real ale, then everything else in the pub, including customer service, quality of food and atmosphere, are likely to be of an equally high standard.”

The beer maybe good but the food isn’t! I use to have breakfast regularly but it was nearly always cold and yes I complained! But with that and the time change for opening I wouldn’t ever go there again!
I agree – have had a couple of veg breakfasts in Newport – sausages has been cooked with meat (my non veg friends tried my meal and agreed).. yes I did complain, shrugged shoulders and denial!
This chain is what it is – cheap frozen food, cheap prices and the free pint with most meals is probably a way of making the food taste better.
Have to say the same chain in Weymouth is far superior, so perhaps once again it’s the IOW.
I think the Ryde ‘Spoons’ is excellent. A meal, AND a drink for a reasonable price always well cooked and the place is clean and the staff efficient.
Many times have been to other Island pubs where I have had long waits, dire food, and paying at least half as much again, and despite pub guides saying ‘A warm welcome awaits’ rarely find that it does.
One pub over West Wight, I had a steak cost over £17, and it was so badly cooked I complained to the young lad saying it had only been cooked one side. He just told us that ‘he was a vegetarian, and had been so from the weeked as his new girlfriend was ‘one’
Such an ‘odd’ answer to my complaint that never bothered saying anything else, but will never go there again.
Least Spoons food always cooked nice with NO rip off price.
Also the Owner is all for getting out of the EU, what’s NOT to like?
