The Isle of Wight Council’s Trading Standards team are reminding Islanders to never engage with an uninvited caller following an incident yesterday (Monday) in which a white van man tried to sell ‘reduced price’ services to a vulnerable resident.
A local care agency has reported that one of their clients received a knock at the door from a man in a white van who stated “he was just passing and noticed that the house needed some plastic caps replacing on the gable and he would do it for a reduced price”.
Luckily, the carer was able to turn the potential scammer away.
The Council say that these traders will identify potentially vulnerable residents and do their best to con them out of money for work that doesn’t need doing or for a bad job.
Authorities are reminding Isle of Wight resident to NEVER engage with an uninvited caller either on the phone or at the door.
If you think you need work doing to your property do some research and find a tradesman that can be trusted – either using the Trader approval Scheme, the Isle of Wight Business Directory or word of mouth.
