A dog sustained fatal injuries after being attacked by another dog ahead of Ventnor’s busy illuminated carnival on Saturday night.

Lin Cato, from Ventnor, was out walking her miniature Schnauzer, Zappy, when he was suddenly attacked by a husky-type dog with brown and black flecked fur.

The incident occurred shortly before 21:30 close to Stripped restaurant on the High Street, near the junction with Church Street.

Despite the best efforts of a mobile vet, Zappy could not be saved and succumbed to his injuries following the ‘fast, cruel and violent’ incident.

The owner of the offending animal did not stay at the scene.

Lin has said that she believes the incident could so easily have involved a child. There were crowds of people gathered for the annual Ventnor Illuminated Carnival.

Anyone with information relating to the incident, such as the identity of the offending animal or its owners, are asked to contact Police on 101 or the RSPCA Isle of Wight branch on 01983 840287.

These parasites who own dogs but have no idea how to even keep a dog, control, train, accept responsibility for, they should be banned for life and placed on an animal abuse register for all to see. I hope this child excuse us located and prosecuted. So sad

Wow this fills me with hope. Hundreds of people on the streets and a dangerous dog and nobody saw it maim another.

My condolences to all concerned. However, one has to ask, is an illuminated carnival the best place to take a pet? With the noise from the bands and the flashing lights how can they understand what’s going on?
