JUNIOR ROWERS TAKE PART IN ISLE OF WIGHT REGATTA ON THE RIVER MEDINA

Around 20 junior athletes from the 3 Isle of Wight rowing clubs – Newport, Ryde and Shanklin – competed in the 7th Isle of Wight Rowing Forum’s Junior Regatta on Sunday (5th May).

There was racing for Coxed Quad Sculls and Single Sculls, as well as Single Sculls with floats. Each race was carried out over a straight 500m course on the River Medina.

Newport Rowing Club hosted the regatta, supported by officials from Ryde and Shanklin and utilising equipment from all 3 clubs.

In order to encourage and develop the close working relationship the 3 clubs have – and to foster good sportsmanship between the clubs – the crews for the Coxed Quads were mixed and drawn from the hat. This approach lead to some very exciting racing with a number of very close finishes.

This was followed by racing in Single Scull for experienced Junior Scullers and an event for the less experienced Single Scullers, using floats.

Garry Walters from Shanklin RC (IW Forum Chairman) and Ryde RC’s Steve Bull (Secretary) presented IWRF Medals to the winning, second and third placed crews and scullers.
