Islanders were given a rare glimpse of one of the Royal Netherlands Navy’s submarines this morning (Friday) when HNLMS Walrus surfaced in the Western Solent whilst en-route to Portsmouth.
The Dutch sub, which has been in service since 1992, visited Cork in Ireland earlier the month and has since transited down the West Coast of the UK before entering the Western Solent at around 10:00 today.
The Needles NCI say it is the first time they have seen a surfaced submarine pass their lookout tower since they opened in 2012.
