ISLAND TEENS CELEBRATE 2019 A-LEVEL RESULTS

Teenagers across the Isle of Wight are celebrating today (Thursday) as they collect their A-Level results, with provisional figures showing that A-level, technical and vocational results have all improved this year.

The average A-level grade has improved to a C from a C- last year – and the average points score derived from the grades students have achieved has gone up significantly from 25.7 to 29.3. Advanced tech-level and applied general qualifications have also both improved by a full half-grade.

Cowes Enterprise College Sixth Form

Almost a third of A Level entries have been graded A*-A – doubling last year’s figure – and 42% of entries achieved A*-B. 12% of the entries have gained the top A* grade, with 9 students in the cohort achieving all A*-A grades. The average grade for all academic qualifications is a C+ – a significant increase again on last year’s results.

As part of Cowes Enterprise College’s commitment to preparing students for their next steps in life, including securing places at leading universities, the number of students going to Russell Group universities has doubled this year.

Amongst the top achievers and destinations include:

• 1 student, who achieved A*A*A*A, has secured a place at Oxford University to study maths
• Alice Doig achieved four A* grades in English Literature, Psychology, Fine Art and an Extended Project
• Lauren Hill, who received AAB, is going to St George’s medical school at the University of London
• Duke Peters achieved ABC, and is going to the University of East Anglia to study medicine
• Lewis Blackmore is joining Rapanui on an apprenticeship having achieved B, C, Distinction. Sam Jones is joining the BAE apprenticeship scheme in September.
• Attaining a Distinction in Health and Social Care and a C in Sociology, Izzy Rothwell has won a place on the well-respected NHS apprenticeship scheme

Island Innovation VI Form

There have been some excellent results for individual students in their A Levels and BTEC studies with some students getting straight A grades or double distinctions.  The vast majority of students are going on to their first choice universities and starting the next exciting stage of their education.

• 43 students achieved A* or A in one or more of their A Level subjects, 9 of which achieved AAB or better.
• 37 students achieved at least one Distinction* or Distinction in their vocational courses.
• Over 60 A* or A grades and 22 Distinction* or Distinction grades were awarded across the centre.
• 64% of A Level grades achieved were A*C.
• 86% of vocational grades achieved were Distinction* to Merit.

Dave Mumford, Head of the VI Form said he is delighted with some of the individual results that have been achieved:

“We have over 150 students going on from the Island to follow a huge range of university courses including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Law, Fashion, accessing the top Russell Group Universities across the country. Congratulations to all students on their achievements and I would like to thank parents and staff for all their support”.

Christ the King College Sixth Form

Students at Christ the King College are celebrating the best KS5 results in the Sixth Form’s history, with 20% of students achieving an A or A* grade in at least one of their subjects and an overall A level success rate of 99%. Students achieving 3 A levels at between an A* and C grade increased by 13% on last year.

Those achieving three level 3 qualifications was up by 22% on the previous year. Though National benchmark data is not yet available, it can be said with confidence that the Sixth Form has performed exceptionally well this year. More than 10% of students achieved a high grade in two or more facilitating subjects, i.e. those courses most commonly required or preferred by universities. The average attainment at A level is a C grade and the average attainment on BTEC qualifications is a Distinction.

Hayley Conway-Hughes, Head of Sixth Form, is absolutely thrilled with the outcomes and said:

“We are so excited for the students today; they have worked unbelievably hard and deserve all of their successes. My thanks go out to the staff team. The standards of provision are very high in the Sixth Form at Christ the King College and these results are a testament to the care and attention we continue to offer our students. They have such exciting futures ahead of them and we wish them continued success in all that they do.”

Platform One College of Music

Once again Platform One students have achieved outstanding results. 30 students have achieved the full Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music, which is equivalent to taking 3 full A Levels. Many students exceeded challenging targets, with 9 students gaining the equivalent of three straight A grades.

15 students will progress to Platform One’s own BA (Hons) Commercial Music degree, which is run in partnership with the University of Chichester. Other students have gained places at reputable universities across the UK, including Bath Spa, Winchester, West London, Southampton, Point Blank, Academy of Contemporary Music, Chichester and Brighton Institute of Modern Music.

Ryde Academy

Ryde Academy has seen an improvement in progress points. 13% of grades were A*/A or above, 31% B or above and 63% C or above. Again, 100% of students have gained at least 2 A Levels or equivalent and 92% have gained at least 3 qualifications.

Results are better than last year, with the progress for A Levels expected to be in line with national and the progress of our students who took applied qualifications to be well above national.

“We are so pleased for our students and know that these results give them the opportunity to go on to lead remarkable lives. We will miss them but wish them the very best for the future.”

Ryde School

Ryde School has seen 25% of A Levels being graded A* or A, 50% of the Higher Level IB Grades at the equivalent (6 or 7) and 90% of BTEC candidates achieving a double distinction or above.

Particular congratulations go to 2 high achieving girls securing places to read Maths at Bath and Nottingham: Annabel Luke of Ryde whose A* in Maths was complemented by A grades in Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and the Extended Project and Joanna Orlik from Whippingham who received 2 A* grades for Maths and Art, alongside A grades in French and Further Maths.

3 students, Veronika Künkel, a boarder from Germany, Joss Spence (Calbourne) and Sophie Ward (Cowes) have secured places at medical schools.

5 students following the IB Diploma achieved the equivalent outcome, grades 6 or 7 at Higher Level, including Pip Andrews of Seaview and Freshwater’s Lauren Bromley who achieved an impressive 41 and 40 points respectively (out of a maximum of 45) putting them in the very highest cohort internationally.

“This is excellent news and demonstrates real progress in our post-16 education. I would like to offer my congratulations to all our students, teachers and other educational professionals for their hard work and dedication.

“These results are a really good step forward and reflect our commitment and determination in partnership with Hampshire County Council to ensuring our young people have the best possible opportunities for the future.”
