Firefighters, Police officers and Paramedics have begun their ‘Blue Light Breakout’ challenge to see how far they can travel from the Isle of Wight in 50 hours – all in the aid of local charity The Wight Brainy Bunch.
With zero planning and no money, the 3 teams of 2 set off from Newport this morning (Thursday) and are making their way across the country using their skills of initiative and persuasion.
Going ‘on the run’ are Mark Grimes & Ross Smallcombe for Team Fire; Tom Ramsay & Iain Lane for Team Police; and Lynsey Groves & Alasdair Day for Team Ambulance. The off-duty emergency crews have given their time freely to take part in the challenge, with hopes of raising thousands for The Wight Brainy Bunch.
Things kicked off this morning with Team Police heading towards Wightlink ferry at Yarmouth, however, Tom and Iain diverted to Cowes where they boarded a local boat and made a quick exit to the mainland. Meanwhile, Team Ambulance managed to secure a seat with the captain on board Red Funnel’s car ferry to Southampton. Team Fie hitched a lift with a lorry driver at the Wightlink Fishbourne terminal heading for Portsmouth and Caen!
The event is supported by Novum Law, Maher Ross and DDC Electronics, along with many other local businesses, who have kindly sponsored the event to ensure the teams can be repatriated to the Island following their challenge.
The winning team will be the pair who travel the furthest in the given time.
