A 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of murdering innocent 17-month-old Jayla-Jean McLaren.
It was on 1st August that Police were alerted to the toddler being admitted to St Mary’s Hospital with serious injuries. She was soon flown to Southampton General Hospital for specialist treatment.
An investigation was launched, with Police taking up position outside the family home on Dairy Crest Drive, Newport.
That night, a 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were both arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. They were bailed until November as enquiries continued.
Sadly, on Sunday afternoon, Jayla-Jean died in hospital. The news shook the local community, with tributes paid at a special event in Newport last Thursday.
Now, 9 days later, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that the couple – who had caring responsibilities for Jayla-Jean – have been re-arrested on suspicion of murder.
They remain in custody for questioning this lunchtime.
Detective Superintendent Rod Kenny has said:
“We know this case has caused considerable distress within the community and our thoughts remain with those affected by Jayla-Jean’s death.
“The arrests made today are just one part of a much wider set of enquiries in our investigation to establish exactly what happened to Jayla-Jean, and those enquiries remain ongoing.
“We would like to reiterate that you should not speculate on this case, particularly on social media, as this could affect our investigation.”

The police have no right to control the speech of individuals. It is a human right. People have every right to talk, discuss and speculate on any subject they choose to
