A man and woman from Newport have been arrested on suspicion of seriously injuring a 1-year-old child, who remains in hospital.
It was yesterday morning (Friday) that the youngster was admitted to the emergency department at St Mary’s Hospital in a serious condition, as first reported by Island Echo.
She was later airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance for specialist treatment.
Concerns surrounding the circumstances of the situation, raised by clinicians at St Mary’s, led to Police being notified.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary was informed of the incident at 11:34 and deployed officers to an address on Dairy Crest Drive in Newport as part of their enquiries.
Police have remained at the property throughout Friday and overnight into Saturday as investigations continue.
It was last night that a 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, both from Newport, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
The pair remain in custody in mainland police stations for questioning.
Island Echo is told that it is unlikely the child will recover.
UPDATE SUNDAY – Tragically, the 1-year-old girl at the centre of the investigation has died in hospital.

Name and shame the scum, how can they harm a defenceless child, poor baby
Omg that is so sad, the poor defenceless little baby. The pair need to rot in prison now. What the hell makes someone want to hurt a defenceless baby I will never know!!
A 1 year old is innocent how the hell can people do that !! We need to name and shame people like this. Let’s hope baby is not suffering to much poor thing.
Their neighbours know exactly who this couple are
And they should tell us who they are so we can make them feel the pain they have caused that poor child.

I saw this little baby in a&e yesterday and now I know what’s happened ig makes me so sad and I can’t stop thinking about her , it’s awful .

It is now reported that the couple involved are the child’s ‘adoptive parents’
which makes this worse the fact the people had adopted the child and then did something so awful.
When the actual parents probably believed the baby was in good hands
Sadly the baby as reported on IE has now passed away.
Why are the couple out on bail??
