Newspaper clippings will be interspersed with popular songs of the day, letters, poems and other articles all written or published in December 1916 as part of Carisbrooke Castle Museum’s ‘Remembering December 1916’ event to be held on Friday 2nd December.
1916 was the year of the Battles of the Somme and Jutland, in which many Island men and boys fought. Many stories and accounts of the bravery of Islanders have been published, and you will hear just a few of these, as well as some stories of what was happening ‘back home’ on the Island.
The audience will be encouraged to join in the chorus of the songs, which are all well known. The second half of the concert will bring the afternoon to a close with carol singing.
‘Remembering December 1916’ is being organised by the Museum Trustees, and will complement the changing exhibitions on display in the Upper Gallery throughout the 4 years of the commemoration of the First World War. There will be a short interval for refreshments, during which the current exhibition may be viewed.
The event takes place on Friday 2nd December from 14:00 until 15:45. Tickets are £5, which includes mince pies and a cup of tea and are available by telephone on 01983 884198, or by email [email protected].
All proceeds will go to the upkeep of the Museum, which includes care of the collections, and maintenance of the Museum.
