79-year-old John Garrett from Ryde died after falling and impaling himself on a toilet roll holder which went through his eye socket, an inquest has this week heard.
The tragic accident occurred in the bathroom of Mr Garrett’s property at The London on the corner of Well Street and Swanmore Road on 18th September last year.
Specialist doctors were called to the scene in the middle of town alongside local firefighters, who worked for over 2 hours to free Mr Garrett from his predicament.
The pensioner was transferred to St Mary’s Hospital but his injuries were so severe that he sustained terminal brain damage and died at Mountbatten Hospice a few days later.
Mr Garrett was known to have several medical conditions and had previously had a number of falls. He was visited by carers 3 times a day.
Caroline Sumeray, Coroner for the Isle of Wight, concluded that Mr John Garrett died as the result of an accident.
