UPDATED: Firefighters from Shanklin are this morning (Thursday) tackling a van fire in Sandown.

The single crew are attending the incident on East Yar Road which has involved a modern white Ford Transit.

The owner of the vehicle smelt burning whilst traveling in the area and took the decision to drive to the nearby Sandown Fire Station, however the station is operated on a retained basis with the nearest available crew being in Shanklin.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have already responded to one vehicle fire this morning in East Cowes, which was just yards from the town’s station. Neither incident are being treated as suspicious.

UPDATE @ 09:25 – The fire has been contained and extinguished, saving the vehicle from destruction. It is believed a gas system may be to blame for the incident.

A ventilation fan is being used in the rear compartment of the vehicle.

Crews are due to leave the scene shortly.
