A 16-year-old boy remains in hospital tonight (Wednesday) after suffering severe burns in a fire in Cowes on Monday.

Emergency services were called to Cowes Yacht Haven at around 00:30 when a fire broke out on a boat stored on dry land, as first reported by Island Echo.

Once on scene emergency crews discovered a 16-year-old local boy with serious burns to the front of his body. He was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital and later airlifted to a specialist burns unit in Swansea, Wales.

Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that the fire is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious. The force say that they were called to an explosion and subsequent fire.

Investigations are continuing.
