Isle of Wight-based international rally driver, Richard Weaver, drove his newly acquired Mitsubishi rally car to a 2nd-in-class win at the weekend.
Sunday (9th September) saw the first outing for the new Wight Rally Sport team as they competed in the Wethersfield Stages in Essex – a single venue rally on an active air base.
The rally car of choice for the duo of Richard Weaver and navigator James Pink was their recently purchased Mitsubishi Evo 6. With little time for testing and with Pink only seeing the car the night before the event, this rally was to be treated as a shakedown for both car and team in preparation for their campaign on the ACSMC Tarmac Championship in 2019.
With 6 stages consisting of 10 miles each over concrete runways and side roads, the Wethersfield Stages proved to be a fast and technical event.
Despite pushing the car to and sometimes past the limits of adhesion with the occasional off, Richard and James found the car to be blistering quick and just as important – reliable, achieving 2nd in their class and 6th overall.
Wight Rally Sport would like to thank Sign Shop Bembridge for their vehicle graphics and support.
The team are planning to compete at many more rallies across the South Coast in the coming months including their next event, The Challenger Stages at Bovington Training Ground in Dorset on 18th November.
