UPDATED: A sinkhole has opened up on a recently resurfaced stretch of Beachfield Road in Sandown this morning (Tuesday).
Police have closed the through road in Sandown town at the junction with Pier Street following the discovery of the 5 metre deep hole.
Prior to the arrival of the authorities, a local placed a stool over the whole to warn others, although motorists say they were aware of the road collapsing for a short while.

Southern Vectis buses Routes 2, 3 and 8 will divert via The Broadway until further notice, serving the High Street stop but not the Post Office stop.
