Motorists face 4 months of travel disruption from next week as a result of water main renewal works on Staplers Road in Newport.
A one-way system is to be implemented on Monday morning to allow Southern Water to replace 500m of pipe between School Lane and Mayfield Drive. This mean motorists heading into Newport will have to divert via Fairlee Road or Blackwater Road. Staplers Road will remain open for traffic exiting the town.
The scheme is a £400,000 investment for the water company with an aim of reducing mains bursts in the area, ensuring a reliable water supply for the Isle of Wight community.
Work will begin at the junction of School Lane/Cross Lane before progressing east along Staplers Road to Mayfield Drive, where things should come to an end in mid-April. However, Southern Water say that work could be extended if they find any unexpected issues. Residents of Staplers Road will have full vehicular access at all times.
Other Southern Water main renewal schemes in Cowes, Brading and Ryde have all over-run by a considerable amount of time.
Motorists should anticipate delays when travelling to/from Newport over the coming weeks.
