A Police sergeant has called for CCTV to be installed on the beach at Ryde after public toilets there were ‘completely obliterated’ last month. The damage was condemned as vandalism by Ryde Town Council and led to the closure of the men’s loos at Appley, as previously reported by Island Echo. Now, portable toilets have been installed on the seafront and an investigation has been launched by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary. On Monday (5th February), at a meeting of Ryde Town Council, a senior officer admitted there were no leads and he blamed a lack of CCTV. Sergeant Matt Brown said officers were patrolling the area and had requested the possibility of installing surveillance cameras be looked at.
Describing the damage, Councillor Michael Lilley, representative for Appley and Elmfield, said the toilets had been “completely obliterated and it wasn’t just vandalism, but a real smash job”. He said the toilets are a “very important leisure community visitor site”, adding it would cost the town council and its residents to restore them to working order. Appealing for anyone who had seen any unusual activity or noticed any damage to get in touch, in a bid to work out when it had happened, the town council apologised for their ongoing closure.

The IWC delegating it’s responsibility and funding to town and parish councils is costly in way of extra staffing, administration buildings etc so in end we get less service’s and appropriate funding. Also Since CCTV was axed by IWC,crime has increased, victims get no justice and cost of damage and investigation by police, insurance payouts etc costing much more than saved and will only increase as no deterrent.
Surely instead of wasting money on looking to buy the Nat West Bank for their new offices, why don’t they install cctv?????
The benefits would outweigh the cost…..
Also the town council, by doing that could save our police a lot of work ….
And the council tax payer’s precepts!!!!!!!
Don’t understand why cctv has been cut !!!!!.
Ooh yes cost !!!!! Now talk about shut the door after the horse has bolted !!!!!!
What costs more ?????
I wouldn’t exacly call buying appreciating asset over a depreciating asset a waste of money.
They are paying about £450k for the bank but after interest payments over loan term, the final cost will be over £900k. Sounds like a total waste of money to me.
And I understand that rent on the existing Lind Street offices will continue to be paid for the next 8 years. So that’s not great ! But when we remember that the guy in charge of finance at RTC is also the leader of IWC (which isn’t a full time job, apparently) then it all starts to make sense.
Those toilets are in a place with multiple entry and exit points so it’s a difficult one. But I’m surprised there isn’t more security in the area given that expensive work is also being carried out at Appley Tower. The whole area around Appley Park is very poorly lit at night.
Install an AI system to monitor and detect vandalism. If a crime is detected, lock down the building with miscreants inside, and either call the police or gas them.
Police have nothing to go on. (Two Ronnies)
So now the Police have nothing to go on…
How do I get my wheelchair in there?
Takes the P@@S.
But the council Tax is increasing
Once again the feral scum destroy facilities and property for “kicks”, they have had no parental upbringing being merely a source of unearned income, in the unlikely event of them being caught they should be jailed and their “parents” made to foot the bill for the entire cost of repairs as well as a penalty for the inconvenience they have caused.
Theses are no good for a poo. You cant wipe your back side in um as there’s no room. Properly fall out head first and get caught with your trousers down.
