Isle of Wight beaches have suffered up to 50 hours of sewage discharge since heavy rain arrived on Wednesday (18th October).
Wednesday saw torrential rainfall with more than 40mm recorded in Gunville and a flood alert issued for the Eastern Yar, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Since then, there was a 50 hour release at Sandown which started at 14:00 on Wednesday and only stopped at 16:00 this afternoon (Friday). Similarly, at Ryde there was almost 50 hours of discharge between Wednesday afternoon and today.
According to The i, the problem has been seen nationwide but they have reported that a co-founder of a Surfers Against Sewage group said that the Island was ‘the worst affected area’.
They also report that ‘real-term data covering storm overflows into coastal bathing areas by Southern Water shows the company has released sewage into 49 out of the 86 bathing locations over the past 36 hours.’
At the time of writing, only 2 beaches on the Island – Compton Bay and Ventnor – did not have sewage pollution alerts in place.

And I am equally certain that the endless illegals won’t add to our overloaded infrastructure of sewage, energy consumption, landfill, longer delays for hospitals, doctors, dentists, not to mention finding housing for our own people.

Sadly you are partly right. We had teenage foster children on the mainland and the Albanian gangs (apparently seeking assylum) actively targeted them for grooming and county lines. Direct action is needed, the water companies will only start to listen if we hit them where it hurts most, in their huge profits and dividends.
Refuse to pay your water bill, target their infrastructure, vehicles, stand up to them their poisoning not just the environment but YOU & ME every time you and your children enter the water, it’s criminal and they’re getting away with it because they back the politicians with fancy dinners and brown envelopes.

Torrent of sewage released is the title when in fact 99% is not sewage & nothing other than ground water. When it rains we have thousands of litres of rain fall, so it has to be managed & released accordingly.
If in the event sw didn’t do this then you would have torrential flooding & infrastructure damage like you do in other countries.
I’m not sticking up for them but you also have to look at the environment agency & council who don’t maintain there gulleys or rivers any more.

Enviromental permits afford water companies some protection when polluting water or land. Water companies have abused the permit system and have been fined. However, this has failed to prevent further excessive pollution.
The Environment Agency’s 2021 report pushes for prison sentences for Chief Executives and Directors of polluting water companies. It has opened an investigation into whether the companies have knowingly or deliberately broken environmental law.
As customers of Southern Water, IOW residents are usually under contract for the supply of water and removal of waste water with SW. It might be construed that SW are failing to discharge their contractual obligation to safely dispose of the wastewater.

Nothing has really changed over the years, even back in the 60’s just off the shoreline somtimes even at low tide there used to be an ‘eruption’ plume of sewage several feet high above the water as they released another load of what we nicknamed dead sailors and if you were unfortunate to be swimming at the time you kept your mouth firmly shut.

The island manager of Southern Water which incidentally came from another poor performing water company, should be sacked along with the waste water manager! Neither are fit to do the job !!

There should not be any discharge of raw sewage into the lake or seas . We are paying Southern water extra on our water bill to discharge all raw sewage into a treatment works to be treated. i do not bear the thought of swimming amongst raw sewage ,
