UPDATED: A primary school in East Cowes has been closed for the remainder of today (Thursday) following an electrical fire within the school grounds earlier this morning (Thursday).
As first reported by Island Echo, fire crews were called to the school on Millfield Avenue just before 10:30 after reports were received of smoke rising from a manhole cover. The school was evacuated and after assessing the incident, firefighters left the scene. However, two hours after first being alerted to the issue, crews were called back to the school at 12:30.
Power to the building has been switched off meaning the school has been closed resulting in parents being asked to collect children as soon as possible.
Engineers from Scottish and Southern Energy are present at the school alongside the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
No persons have been injured in the incident.
UPDATE @ 17:20 – The school is set to reopen as normal tomorrow, according to the Isle of Wight Council.
A fire was discovery underground, however repair works are underway.
