A large scale rescue operation that occurred in the West Wight last night (Saturday) saw multiple casualties extracted from a boat that ran aground in Totland Bay.
As previously reported by Island Echo, at around 21:15 numerous emergency services were told that a boat had come to rest at the bottom of the cliff near the Headon Warren Viewpoint, just past The Waterfront Bar & Restaurant.
Upon impact, it is believed that those on board were thrown forward sustaining injuries.
Hampshire Constabulary confirmed that injuries ranged from walking wounded to more serious medical needs.
The RNLI Lifeboat from Yarmouth was launched to the scene and was joined by HM Coastguard Rescue teams from The Needles and Ventnor shortly after.
Access to those on board proved tricky, so Rescue Helicopter 175 was also drafted in to assist the rescue efforts.
A winch man paramedic was dropped at the shoreline where he assisted members of the RNLI Lifeboat – who has used the small Y-boat to reach the shore.
Police and ambulance crews from the Island also attended the scene offering on-land support.
After around 2.5 hours on scene, multiple casualties were winched up to the helicopter before being conveyed to HM Coastguard’s Lee-on-Solent base at around 23:45, where they were met by ambulance crews and taken to hospital.

Not even more illegals one hopes.
Our hospital, like our prisons and maternity wards are all at full capacity now. We can no longer afford to treat, house, educate and keep ourselves fed and warm without the worlds chancers adding to our heavy burden.
Yeah, because people smugglers give migrants £100k boats to cross the channel in, don’t they?
This may come as a shock to you, but some can be dishonest and steal, despite the media brainwashing that they can ‘do’ no wrong.
It is not beyond the realms of possibility that any illegals could not have stolen the craft, and crashed it due to lack of experience.
So why the bitter reply?
Perhaps you are closely involved with such one wonders.
“because people smugglers give migrants £100k boats”
NO, but we ‘give them’ £300k homes and in their life time let alone their oft numerous children, many many more times that sum in subsidised living.
They don’t risk their lives to come for the weather. The boat could easily have been stolen, it is not unknown for people who arrive in a land illegally to steal you know.
THINK
There are two possibilities here.
Honestly, even wighter, and he’s the worst of them, concedes it was dunk Brits, probably over on a jolly.
THINK? Why? You clearly didn’t.
What has your comment got to do with this – you need to get that massive chip off your shoulder.
Comment made as a week or two ago a rib with expensive outboard was found abandoned at Whale Chine as reported on here, and was an illegal-imm craft, so NOT beyond the realms of feasibility that similar could have occurred elsewhere if sneaking in illegally.
more likely that those on board may have been drunk and not watching where they were going – as that has clearly hit the rocks at speed
My thoughts exactly. The waterfront and the hut further dkwn at colwell have customers off these sort of boats and many drink too much. It could also just be a simple accident . Let’s not get carried away
Should use a Dinghy, the Folks who arrive from France on a daily basis are better sailors.
Seeing the picture I thought this was going to be an article on the economy.
LOL… I’ve just got the joke! The economy ‘on the rocks’ so to speak (needed explaining for those less switched on)
The whole of Europe is on the rock’s, not just the UK, The Chinese Pandemic and Putins War have created problems for most of the World….Putin is about to be cornerd what will he do next???…no-one knows!…things could get a lot worse, if he is mad enough to use nooks our economy is the last thing we need to worry about….
I’m not too worried about Putin using nooks, it’s the crannies I’m more concerned with.
Yes. But most of them don’t have governments that are intentionally crashing their economies. Or have you not been keeping up with the news?
Go back to bed, I haven’t a clue what the hell your prating on about….
Probably a load of posh twonks on a stag do cruise. Clear visability, relatively calm seas, high tech’ navigation equipment on board and yet they still managed to run aground? Pis*ed Pilot showing off to his mates is my guess?
We were on the 19.00 ferry to Lymington and noticed a small boat tearing around like a lunatic as we approached Lymington port. They had no lights on at first even though it was dusk. Looked like somebody inexperienced showing off.
How do you even begin to police or prevent any irresponsible drunken lunatic from taking the helm of a boat and putting not only their lives at risk but the lives of the brave and dedicated men and women of our emergency services? Selfish Bas*eds !!!
His showing off has f— ked his pride and joy they won’t get that off without ripping a hole in it if it hasn’t already
I doubt they’re at all bothered, after all it was ‘Daddy’s’ boat. The ‘poor’ chap will now have to dip into one of his offshore accounts for the repairs or just buy the spoilt brat a new one.
Hope he was tested for drink or drugs
must be a island driver
Don’t be daft if it was an island driver would be on its roof !!
Can’t park there mate!
Used to do that all the time in GTA 3 because the guy couldn’t swim
Best comment ever 😀
More bad steering on IW, at least it’s not upside down. . . Yet!
Money dosent buy intelligence or good seamanship.
Do you mean “doesn’t”. Spelling not part of your intelligence test when becoming a qualified skipper then
Oh do naff orf!
More money than sense
How the he’ll did that happen
All the gear and no idea !
Let’s hope a drink and drugs test was done, but knowing our local police force, probably not.
Are they illegals coming over from France? Hope not.
No reasons given as to why it crashed or “run aground”. Once known if it was due to drink or drugs hope they receive the necessary penalty, should it be smuggling then a long, long prison sentence.
Bit more info needed before further reader speculation, why did it crash and who were the injured?
