27-year-old Samara Jay Glover has been charged with the murder of 17-month-old Jayla-Jean McLaren, Police have confirmed tonight (Thursday).
It was early on Friday 1st August last year that the young child was rushed from her home on Dairy Crest Drive, Newport to St Mary’s Hospital with serious injuries, later being transferred to Southampton General Hospital by air for specialist treatment.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of all involved, the youngster died in hospital on the Sunday afternoon due to serious head injuries, sparking an outpour of emotion from the local community.
A 27-year-old woman, now named as Isle of Wight woman Samara Glover, was initially arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, alongside a 31-year-old male, who had caring responsibility for Jayla-Jean.
The pair were later re-arrested on suspicion of murder, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Now, following months of investigation work by detectives, Glover – of Dairy Crest Drive in Newport – has been charged with murder and causing or allowing the death of a child.
She remains in custody tonight, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says.
Glover is expected to appear before Magistrates on Friday morning.
The 31-year-old man, also from Newport, who was previously arrested on suspicion of murder, causing or allowing the death of a child, and causing assault/ill treatment/neglect/abandonment of child/young person to cause unnecessary suffering/injury, has been bailed with conditions until Monday 27th April.
Detective Chief Inspector Gemma Hunter of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“We understand that cases such as this are incredibly concerning and upsetting.
“However, we kindly ask that you do not speculate on this case, as it could potentially impact any future court proceedings.
“We will provide further updates on this investigation when appropriate.”
