A woman in her 40s has been airlifted to the mainland in a potentially life-threatening condition after being hit by a car in Cowes earlier this morning (Thursday).
The incident occurred at 08:07 when a white Kia Picanto struck the pedestrian on Newport Road, half way between the junctions of Smithards Lane and Milton Road, as first reported by Island Echo.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service rushed to the scene, where the casualty was found to have a serious head injury.
Police say the woman has sustained potentially life-threatening injuries and has been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance for specialist trauma treatment.
A road closure has been put in place and is likely to remain for several hours.
Roads Policing Officers from the mainland have arrived in Cowes to conduct further on scene investigations.

I think it says a lot about the island when the victim has to be flown off the island for treatment, the investigating police have to be sent from the mainland, and the journalist can’t spell woman in the headline.
Better survival rate.
St Mary’s Newport would not have a clue.
The island would be fcuked without Mainland Hospitals.
Blimey, that’s a 30mph. How fast was that car going to cause such catastrophic injuries!
NO speed cameras on the Island is the problem
20mph is plenty, it’s the policy in Wales and London
Needs to be rolled out on the island.
Saves lives
Stepped out in between parked cars? Driver had a vaxident?
I hope the lady is okay.
Hope the lady is OK, such a worrying time for all her family and friends.
No skid marks and direction of parked kia says that the pedestrian has walked between the parked cars onto the road and the driver had no chance of stopping. There is virtually no damage to the front of the kia in the picture, which also indicates that the driver was going slowly.
unfortunate accident for the driver by the looks of it
You make far too many assumptions. None of these are facts and the circumstances are not your concern. Maybe just don’t comment when all you can do is speculate and cause upset for others.
hamad – a mountain of evidence has been presented to you by Island Echo in the form of text and imagery. By using a relatively simple analytical process, you can look for reliable indicators to determine the situation.
there are no assumptions – it is an evidence based assessment.
it would make sense for you to not comment, as the adults are speaking.
Also that’s why parking on roads is not the good practice: limited visibility. I’m still in awe UK allows this so casually – and cars getting larger adding to the problem.
Car’s are getting larger because people are getting larger, look around any supermarket and you will see the crap there putting into their basket….
not my problem. If anything the more slovenly people are, the less competition
Your theory matches mine yet i saw thumbs down? Mad world we live in.
Sharon clearly doesn’t drive otherwise she would know you can die from being hit at 5mph if you smash your skull on the curbside.
exactly eyelawhite – if the car was travelling at any real speed, there would have been front end damage to that kia. even just lightly clipping a pedestrian at very low speed in something that weighs many tonnes, is enough to knock you to the ground.
Pedestrians do step out to their cars a lot there… I’ve had to swerve out before now when someone has just walked out or opened their car door onto the road…. its really tricky, especially if there is a vehicle coming down the hill there…
Road safety on the Island is diabolical.
IW Council are clueless when it comes to Road Safety!
So many roads need speed limits “ENFORCED”
So sad a young family could lose there mother over a selfish old fart this is why a age cap got to be done on driving so sad
