A woman in her 30s has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act following an incident in Sandown this morning (Friday), in which a car was destroyed by fire.
Police were called at 03:56 to reports that a car had been deliberately set on fire in Stower Place.
Firefighters from Sandown and Shanklin had been mobilised to the scene a short while before, using hose reel jets and breathing apparatus to extinguish the blaze.
As first reported by Island Echo, a Toyota Aygo X has been completely destroyed with a fence and wheelie bin also damaged.
The vehicle’s distraught owner – who works at St Mary’s Hospital – returned to her vehicle shortly before 06:50 to find the charred remains. She had heard the explosions in the night but didn’t realise her car was involved.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that officers spoke with a woman in her 30s at the scene of the fire this morning. She was subsequently taken to Sevenacres at St Mary’s Hospital having been detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.
So sorry for the lady’s car, was terrible to see.
