Last night’s Isle of Wight Council meeting ended with shouting and calls that an ‘undemocratic vote’ was taking place — after a meeting went on every so slightly past 21:00. As part of the Isle of Wight Council’s constitution, a regular full council meeting can only run for 3 hours. Typically, it starts at 18:00 and ends at 21:00 when business is stopped, regardless of where it stands. Yesterday (Wednesday), however, the council chamber erupted after a decision was made to continue a vote past 21:00. Councillors had been debating a motion put forward by Cllr Karl Love for 20 minutes — about whether a full consultation with ‘all Island citizens’ was to be held over the change to move to a committee system — and were halfway through a vote when the clock struck 21:00. https://youtu.be/PITead1P00Y?si=m_lBoKVdD_L-NENN&t=10777 Councillor Geoff Brodie led calls the meeting should be ‘terminated’ as it was 21:00 and the vote could no longer continue. The council’s senior governance advisor and acting monitoring officer for the meeting, Francis Fernandes, said the meeting could continue as it was down to the discretion of the chair, Councillor Claire Critchison. Cllr Critchison said the vote could continue and the meeting would carry on until it finished. However, Cllr Brodie said the meetings had been an ‘absolute shambles’ and it was breaking the constitution. Members of the Empowering Islanders group — minus Councillor Dave Adams who had walked out shortly after 21:00 — said it was an ‘unconstitutional vote’ so they voted against. The vote fell and the meeting finished at 21:05. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnqpsxjOOFs

Omg heaven forbid they have to stay 5/10 minutes over …..
This really shows how pathetic the numptys are ….
When I am at work you often run over ,but hey ho suck it up and carry on….
It’s life unless you are a total numpty or a Councillor………
I can’t actually think of 1 numpty i would vote for so I won’t bother !!!! All tarred and feathered with the same brush…..
Alliance is a word they don’t understand the meaning of……
Me me me that’s all they think of ….
Acting like children when they hear the end of school day bell. Sack the lot of them.
We have that chance in 14 months time. Pound to a penny we elect the same lot back again, the same people who gave us the floating bridge fiasco, the lease on the Ryde Ice Rink that seems to be worthless in law, the worst education in the WHOLE country, etc (add your own council inspired sh*t storm).
And these pathetic childish morons are running things on the island (into the ground)! It really is time to rid ourselves of these egotistical, lying, corrupt, fools.
Pathetic. For someone who is so passionate about Democracy (See Island Echo) – asking for a vote to be halted half way through is not exactly democratic!
What a waste of our money these people are…
What a bunch of idiots. Debating and voting on a change to how they make decisions so they can actually make useful decisions at last but some fool thinks going on for five minutes past 9 pm is the end of the world. Just grow up. If you don’t want to represent the people who voted for you, hand in your resignation and let someone who cares take over.
Shirkers. Some appalling behaviour from a couple of them. The ‘ref’ added a bit of ‘injury’ time (inevitably there was timewasting!)& a couple of kids in the front row had a meltdown because they had to stay a couple of minutes over time.
That kind of dissent in footy gets you a three match ban!
Shocking that as soon as they are asked to finish off the piece of work they are on that they try to quote the minitue of the rule book & refuse to accept the ‘refs’ decision. Try running a proper business or doing a real job that way.
What a bloody shambles, still I guess Jordan had to pop to the pub before home time for a top up. Does a few minutes overtime really matter, how petty.
I bet by the time they had a tea and biscuits, the meeting probably didn’t start till 7,I love paying my council tax knowing it’s going to good use
Shouting in the council chamber….sounds more like a school play ground to me….maybe our elected representatives need to learn to grow up and chill out whilst conducting grown up business.
Unfortunately these are the people that decide what can and what cannot happen on the IOW.
What a bunch of school kids
They sound exactly as ridiculous as our glorious leaders at Westminster.
Pathetic.
Confirming that all councillors,no matter what party are just utter, immature, plebs!
May I suggest that…upon the commencement of these proceedings…that they all get together to have a. ‘group hug’ .. thus instigating a feeling of friendship and teamwork..which may benefit us all.. ‘bless their little cotton socks ‘…
In amongst all this tomfoolery, has anyone noticed that they voted down a motion that would have allowed the public a say on the new proposed committee system ? Am I the only one who thinks that is outrageous, especially from a council who claim to be open and accountable.
“It was an absolute shambles” what an apt description of this council.
If you think this is an attack on democracy, look at the new ID rules for voting. In the last four elections there has been less that 50 people attempting to vote with someone else’s voting card. And yet the government has brought in rules saying you need photo ID. This IS going to exclude over two million people from voting, mostly the poor. And will open the door for your typical racist to claim any person of colour is not the person in the photo because “they all look the same”. Seriously, I work with some people at the council that strongly believe this and if given the chance will exclude black people from voting. And how many disabled people have a driving licence or a passport. Some do but the many I know, they do not.
Yes, quite true. Huge problem for first time voters (most likely to NOT vote Tory!). The elderly (who often DO vote Tory) can use their bus passes as ID….kids can’t, and neither can those who a have a disability bus pass. To vote you HAVE to have either a passport or a driving licence OR apply online in advance for government voter ID. They don’t make the facts widely known though. It’s almost as if they don’t want some people to vote.
You talk total nonsense, you neither need a driving licence or a passport to vote, you can get a document from your local council for free if you are entitled to vote,, these restrictions are primarily to stop people voting numerous times that happens in many labour boroughs, I do not believe your comments about knowing people at the council who would prevent black people voting, why have you done nothing about it, are you supporting racism.
I don’t share your pessimism, fred, but the simple way round the problem of photo id is to have a postal vote. It can be returned to the polling station on the day if anyone’s wavering over who gets their vote.
Register for a postal vote is a way around it.
All you need is your NI number and a picture of your signature.
Why do you want poors to vote? Everything went downhill after they let women vote
I’d guess it was called an undemocratic vote because it had already been agreed by all, and written into their constitution, that there was a time limit. For one person to be able to overrule that is…undemocratic.
Is it democratic for one person to delay a meeting to ensure a vote doesn’t happen?
Bloody Amateurs … !! Not an ounce of sense or integrity in the room . No wonder the island continues to fail .. what is the Leader and Chief Exec doing ??
I work for the Council and if I walked out at my finish time of 5pm I’d be sacked!
Roll out 20mph Islandwide is an issue IW Council
should be addressing.
It’s happening countrywide, bring it on.
Perhaps they would remain until the days work is done, or are they just in it for themselves
Join the Real World, when was the last time any of us were able to leave work on time,?
Just goes to prove these councillors are a total waste of money @
And there lies the problem for this place we call home. Come on you lot. The chair seemed very strong.
