Isle of Wight Councillors will take home more than £9,500 this year for the time they dedicate to the role. Members agreed on their allowance scheme for the financial year ahead at a meeting on Thursday, setting the basic amount they will receive as at least £9,605. An annual uplift, which is yet to be determined but is in line with the nationally agreed increase for council employees, could also be added. Last year, there was an 8.76% uplift for members which increased their allowance from £8,832 to £9,605 — an extra £773. The council has said an allowance is not a salary but a partial reimbursement of losses incurred for councillors as they are not at work during that time. Each of the 39 councillors is entitled to the basic allowance but they do not have to accept it or can take only part of it. Members with more duties — like cabinet members, leaders and chairs of committees — are entitled to additional money, in a ‘special responsibility allowance’. The council leader, Councillor Phil Jordan could get 3 times the basic allowance — £28,815 — and Councillor Ian Stephens, the deputy leader more than double — £21,611 — in 2024/25. Cabinet members get twice the allowance — £19,210. Only one special responsibility allowance is allowed per councillor. The scheme passed through a vote, with the majority of members in favour however, Councillor Paul Fuller was against it and Councillors Joe Lever and Peter Spink abstained.

Make it performance based .. then most of them would owe us money. All in it for themselves .. and what they can get out of the joke council .
If they could only retain some dignity and respect for their position..and agree to put aside their own differences.. in favour of the general good.. as I’ve suggested before.. How’s about a ‘group hug ‘ before meetings ? ..followed by some tea and cake… if they are that hard up..my granny says she’ll bake the cake…
How much time do they have to devote to their duties?
Vote for their own pay rise what ever next? Can anyone give an number of councillors claiming and the total cast to us?
Money and old rope springs to mind.
Clueless bunch of muppets. 29 monkeys from the zoo could do a better job. Sack the lot of them and let the public make the decisions.
Here we go again, Council tax increased by maximum amount, then add on increases in Police Fire Service etc etc precepts and now the councillors ridiculous payments. Soon it will be a case of our pensions etc being paid to these money grabbing incompetent people and they might see fit to give us a little back whilst we all move into a cardboard box estate’s on waste land because it’s all we can afford!
It’s time appreciate action is taken to cut these expenses, reduce the number of councillors ; reduce the expenses of those that remain, let them find a second job like so many of us,to make ends meet.
The whole cost of Policing Fire etc should be coming from the Council tax not in addition to!!
This council disgust me. Jerk Jordan is so far up his own a**e he can’t see plain daylight. They are on the take and are getting away with it day after day, and this is just a kick in the teeth of council tax payers. Not a salary but a reimbursement, what a bloody joke. Why not waste another £660,000 on the next scheme that will fail too.
None of them are needed, just another waste of money.
Why are they getting above inflation rises when the rest of the people are not? I get that it’s not a salary but playing semantics here is not on. Reimbursed losses while they are not at work? I’d doubt that few have full time jobs they are allowed to put aside so they can attend council business, most work is done ad hoc. I’d also like to suggest then that when not attending council business, ie, meetings, votes etc they have their ‘allowance’ docked in the same way we would if we took time off our normal jobs. In most people’s worlds, if we wanted to have a say in local politics and dipped in and out of our day jobs to do so, we’d be sacked. Therefore it means that only the wealthier can afford to have a say in politics.
Better still, only pay them for meetings attended based on a minimum requirement (pay them nothing at all if they don’t reach the minimum for a year) and upper limit.
If our local councillor in Wroxall is anything to go by they deserve the rise, the work he does for the community
is fantastic.
Since when. I must of missed this extensive workload.
We were much better off when councillors were unpaid and had a genuine interest in what was best for the Island. I don’t think this applies today, it’s just easy money.
We can now see why their always jockeying for the post’s
Not one of them are worth a penny. Childish, useless, incompetent, waste of spaces.
All a bunch of overpaid useless B’stards
What baffles me is this idea that ‘Joe the builder’ could be doing his job on a Friday, get voted in and by Monday be responsible for Education or Transport etc for which he/she has absolutely no experience, no training and sod all chance of knowing what the hell they are doing,,, and on top of this they get a nice £19210 pocket money, win or lose! It used to be done by volunteers, for little expenses but from the genuine desire to help their community, now it is all about the image and power!
Most of them are on less than minimum wage with the time taken to carry out the role. Ought to be higher or all you’ll attract are wealthy and/or retired people.
