Police were called to the scene and arrested Sparrow on the spot. She later blew a staggering 144 on the evidential breathalyser – 4.11x the legal limit of 35.

Helen Sparrow admitted a single charge of driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above limit at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 23rd August. Solicitor Liz Miller told the court that her client admitted she had a problem but did not realise she was over the limit at the time of the incident.

Magistrates decided to hand down a 6-week prison sentence – suspended for 12 months – and banned Sparrow from driving for a period of 26 months. She must also pay court costs of £85 with a £122 surcharge.

4 times over limit & suspended sentence 6 weeks for 12 months plus costs, should have been sentenced to prison , by they way she was moving the car the situation could have been much different.
If she was not stopped someone could have been badly injured.
Why are the punishment for these crimes so leanient?

Barry, I have noticed magistrates and judges are very reluctant to jail women, there was a recent case reported in the Telegraph were a women knocked down a school girl, reversed off her and drove away. In court she was charged with driving whilst disqualified, without insurance and drunk. the judge stated (on record) “if you were a man I would hand out a custodial sentence” instead she was banned again from driving and given six months suspended for a year! (After a spell in hospital, the little girl was okay)

And if her car had not been so damaged she would have driven away. If you have an accident you stay to deal with insurance. You try to run when you have something to hide, just as she did.
