UPDATED: 1 man has been detained and a gun has been recovered by Armed Police following a firearms incident in the sleepy hamlet of Winford this morning (Thursday).
Local residents were awoken by shouting at around 02:00 with the chilling words “Armed Police – put the gun down” echoing in the dead of night.
Island Echo understands that at least 1 shot has been fired by Police, however, a non-lethal weapon has been used in order to bring the situation to a safe conclusion.
4 Armed Officers – including 2 brought over from the mainland – are on scene at Forest Way alongside a local dog unit, a number of unarmed officers and an Inspector.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are also in attendance and are assessing the detained male.
A cordon has been erected surrounding an open area close to a small number of houses. Residents are being told to keep back.
1 firearm has been recovered and made safe. A vehicle is also being recovered.
UPDATE @ 03:53 – Police have now lifted the cordon and left the scene having concluded the incident.

UPDATE @ 11:52 – A 45-year-old man remains in Police custody this morning, it has been confirmed.
